When you purchase a used car in St. Louis, or it's time to renew your registration your current vehicle, you may be required to get a Missouri State Safety Inspection to register your vehicle. The best way to know if you need to get a Missouri State Safety Inspection to renew your registration is on your renewal notice from the Missouri Department of Revenue. A Missouri State Safety Inspection is very similar to a multi-point inspection; however, the main goal of the Safety inspection is to locate any major safety concerns that would make your vehicle unsafe to operate in the state of Missouri.

When you bring your Buick GMC vehicle to our Buick GMC Service Center in St. Louis, we will thoroughly inspect your vehicle following the required guidelines set forth by the State of Missouri. Upon approval, you will receive a Certificate of Inspection and Approval that you will take with you when you go to get your tags renewed on your vehicle. Occasionally during our safety inspection, we will catch an issue that has to be fixed prior to a Certificate of Inspection and Approval is given. Some examples of services that may be required include battery replacement, windshield wiper replacement, tire replacement, and brake pad replacement.
According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, "Missouri law requires all motor vehicles to pass a vehicle safety inspection performed by an authorized Missouri inspection station, unless exempt." There are very few exemptions that qualify to skip a Missouri State Safety Inspection, but the biggest one is the age of the vehicle. If the vehicle is 10 years old or less AND has less than 150,000 miles then it is exempt from the Missouri State Safety Inspection. However, this does not make you exempt from Emissions testing and you should follow the appropriate guidelines to find out if Emissions testing is required for your registration renewal. When you receive your Certificate of Inspection and Approval, you will have 90 days to present it to the License office to get your registration renewed.
