Vehicles have a differential that is a gear that allows for power to transfer from the engine to a pair of drive wheels, but also compensates for the larger distance that the outer wheel that has to travel while cornering. When it comes to speed, the outer wheel travels at a slightly quicker rate while traveling a slightly longer distance. The differential on each axle is the gear that compensates every wheel precisely for the best possible driving experience. Differentials are needed on every pair of drive wheels. If your vehicle is front-wheel drive, the differential is located on the front axle between the two wheels. The differential is on the rear axle between the two rear wheels for rear-wheel drive vehicles, and for all-wheel drive vehicles, they have two differentials with one on the front axle and the other on the rear axle.

Depending on what vehicle you have, differential problems can take place on either the front or rear. Usually, the differential will make a noisy racket when there is an issue, but it isn’t guaranteed. Some of the issues include grinding noise from internal gear friction and whining noise at the differential. There could also be vibrations during acceleration, some steering difficulties, and the inner tire could be worn down quicker. If the inner tire has more wear, it could be that it is rotating faster than the other tires.
